Blue Shield began over 50 years ago, and its service now covers three million members with 36,000 in-network physicians and 240 preferred hospitals.
Not only has Blue Shield of California shown impressive growth, but it has also been a master of “firsts”. In 1996, it became the first California health plan to offer online benefits and enrollment information. Four years later, it became the first health plan to connect providers and members online. In 2002, it gained yet another first by becoming the first health plan to propose statewide universal coverage. And in 2010, it became the first California health plan to publicly recognize highly rated physicians by way of the Blue Ribbon Recognition Program.
Blue Shield of California is also a non-profit mutual benefit corporation. The corporation has contributed more than $325 million (and that’s only since 2005!) to the Blue Shield of California Foundation, which funds other non-profit organizations that contribute to measures that prevent domestic violence. Furthermore, Blue Shield voluntarily maxes its net income at 2% of the total revenue, which has allowed more than $560 million to be returned to members AND the community.
